It started with one dog we couldn't feed.

Meet Ruby, and the family she turned into a treat company.

We didn't set out to start a treat company. We set out to feed one dog.

Her name is Ruby. She's the reason this company exists, and she still lives with our family in Missouri, where every new recipe gets its first taste test on the kitchen floor.

When Ruby was young, treats were a gamble. We'd bring home a bag that looked great, she'd love it, and two days later she'd be sick again. So we started reading labels the way you read a contract. Long words that sounded like food and weren't. "Natural flavor" with no explanation. Brands that couldn't tell us where anything came from.

At some point we stopped asking "which treat is safe for Ruby?" and started asking "why is this so hard?" That question became Dog Treat Naturals.

A family, not a factory

We're a family business, and we've stayed one on purpose. There's no test kitchen with a glass wall and no founder in a lab coat. There's us, a kitchen table, a lot of opinions, and a taste-testing panel that walks on four legs.

Being small is what lets us be picky. Every decision about what goes in the bag is made by someone who feeds these treats to their own dog. We don't own the bakery, and we'd never pretend we do. What we own is the choice of who bakes for us and exactly what they bake with. Our treats are made in the American Midwest in a facility that is GMP and SQF certified, a food safety standard written for human food that most treat brands never bother to meet.

If we wouldn't hand it to Ruby, it doesn't get made. That's the whole rule.

What we mean by real

Every ingredient has to do a job, and we have to be able to tell you where it came from. It sounds simple until you try to build a treat around it.

  • The protein goes first. In our meat recipes, beef, chicken, turkey, duck, salmon, pork or lamb is the #1 ingredient on the bag, not a flavor sprayed on at the end.
  • Real produce. Pumpkin, apples, cranberries, blueberries, mango, dates and sweet potato. Food you'd recognize on your own plate.
  • No corn, wheat or soy. Nothing we make has corn, wheat or soy, and every ingredient is listed on the bag.
  • Nothing artificial. No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. A natural vitamin E blend keeps things fresh.

Then we listened to other dog families

Once people started feeding our treats, the emails changed. Less "what's in it?" and more "do you have anything for the itching? The nerves? The old hips?" We heard the same stories over and over, and we recognized every one of them, because we'd lived them with Ruby.

Most of what's out there for those problems is a pill you hide in peanut butter, and most dogs figure that out by day three. So we spent a long time on postbiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria, and live bacteria are fragile. Heat, shelf time and stomach acid get most of them. Postbiotics are what's left when the work is already done. They're stable, they survive baking, and they're ready from the first chew.
